There’s a good chance that when you read this article you’ll come to understand that you’ve been ignoring some telltale signs that something is wrong with your air conditioner.

And it’s not necessarily that you will come home to a broken air conditioner and an oppressively hot house or open the doors of your business and the environment will be too stifling to work in. That’s obviously not a pleasant scenario, but neither are the telltale signs that things are going wrong. You may have, inadvertently, been allowing dirty and unpleasant particles into the atmosphere for your family, colleagues or customers to be inhaling.

Maintenance is so important. If it’s leaking water or gas, or bad odours are being emitted, then you need to get onto it immediately. Air conditioning specialists are the only people with the qualifications to advise on whether your unit is able to be repaired or if it should be replaced.

Sometimes, it’s too late and you need a replacement unit. If the problems are irreversible how do you know and what should you do?

Not cooling

If you find that your air conditioning isn’t maintaining a cool temperature and you’ve had a repairman out for a maintenance check and repairs, there’s a good chance that your unit has had its day. It’s especially obvious if your electricity bills are soaring. That means that your unit is draining unnecessary amounts of energy to perform its job; a job that it’s increasingly unable to perform.

Build up of moisture and leaking

All air conditioners produce some moisture. But excessive moisture might mean that you have a refrigerant leak. That poses a serious health risk to you, your family, colleagues and customers. Mould is never far away when there is a moisture build up. Illness from mould is well documented and debilitating. If you can’t rid your unit of the leak or the mould then you should replace it.

Bad smells

If your unit is emitting foul odours there’s a good chance that something is wrong with your insulation or ducting. It may be damaged or it may have a buildup of mildew or mould. Whatever the cause, it can’t be tolerated. If the smell continues after maintenance then you have to seriously consider investing in a replacement split system air conditioner or and upgraded ducted air conditioning unit, as the case may be.

We only recommend a replacement air-conditioner when the one you have can’t be repaired or when it’s more cost effective to do so. We carry a large range of parts for on the spot repairs and if we need to order a part we’ll source it quickly.
